About the Artist:
Othmar Brioschi was the eldest son of the theatre painter Carlo Brioschi (1826-1895) and the brother of Anton Brioschi (1855-1920). Initially trained as a theatre painter, he studied in Munich with Simon Quaglio (1795-1878), but also from 1874 at the Munich Academy, where he studied figure painting with Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910) from 1876. From 1878 to 1880 he worked as his father’s assistant in Vienna and exhibited his paintings at the Künstlerhaus. He became a member in 1879. He then studied until 1882 at the master school for landscape painting under Eduard von Lichtenfels and won the Grand State Prize in 1882 with a two-year stay in Rome. In 1885, Othmar Brioschi moved to Rome, which became his permanent residence. In 1887, Brioschi married Maria, known as Mimmy, daughter of the sculptor Heinrich Max Imhof, who had two daughters with him. The artist’s strength lies in his excellent depiction of the landscapes of the Rome region, which he renders in all possible moods, with lighting effects and a strong coloristic effect.
