Givanian was born in Constantinople in 1848. In the 1860s he was studying with the Artist Abraham Sakayan. He studied at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul under the guidance of the French Artist Pierre Guillement. In 1874 he met the famous painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, whose work inspired Givanian to marinistics. From 1876 to 1879 he was in Italy. Upon his return to Istanbul, he married an Italian woman in 1885. In 1894 he moved to Odessa, Ukraine. After seven years he moved to St. Petersburg, where he lived 4 years. The Artist died in 1906 in Istanbul.
