Emanuel Mahtesyan was a Russian artist-mariner of Armenian descent.
In 1878 he was admitted to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts as a free listener. He graduated from the Academy in 1892 and during his studies he received a small first, and then a great silver medal. At the end of three years he lived in Feodosia, working in the studio of Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky . In 1895 he moved to Simferopol, where he lived until his death in 1908.
At the studio, Magdeesyan opened a picture gallery for the public, which included pictures of his authorship, as well as works of other artists given to him. The gallery became the first public art museum in Simferopol. Throughout the territory of the former USSR, only a few dozen paintings have survived, many of which are in private collections.
