The son of a Hamburg merchant started out in Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre. Later he went to Rome where he devoted himself to the historical genre. He focused on elegant conception and smooth costume painting. He chose his motifs with preference from the distinguished social class. His portraits, partly painted in the manner of Titian, partly in the Rembrandt, are also greatly appreciated. In 1870 he had to leave France for the time of the Franco-German War. Heilbuth lived in Paris at first with the political refugees Moritz Hartmann and Heinrich Bernhard Oppenheim in a small hotel called Les trois frères, after the road of the same name, a continuation of the rue Taitbout to Montmartre, already at the end of the 19th century the town restoration to the Victim had fallen.
