Clement Gontier (1876 Lavaur - 1918 Castres)
Flower Still Life
Material: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 130 x 98 cm
Clement Gontier was born in Lavaur, France. Nothing predestined this child from modest circumstances as a painter. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse, Gontier appeared between the capital and in September in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens. His career, however, began with the participation in the competition for the Prix de Rome in 1901. For his canvas, the painter received the “second Grand Prix”, which gave him praise from some of the Paris press. History painting has a special place in the work of the artist. The reference to Jean-Paul Laurens is ubiquitous. The painter multiplies “pleasant themes” of bouquets and other still life. His sensitivity gives his works a real psychological depth.
